Planned Parenthood loses Grants

The folks at Politico, as well as a number of media outlets, have taken note of the fact that the Susan G. Komen for a Cure Foundation has announced that it will no longer give grants to Planned Parenthood.   Despite the press reports, the foundation has established valid criteria that says it won't grant funds to organizations under government investigation.    That's a wise move on the part of the Komen Foundation and a well-deserved blow to Planned Parenthood whose only 'real mission' is to kill the unborn...

From Politico:

"SUSAN G. KOMEN CUTS OFF PLANNED PARENTHOOD- A prominent cancer charity, The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, announced it would no longer give grants to Planned Parenthood. The grants, totaling around $680,000 went to breast cancer screenings and other "breast health services," The Associated Press reported. Planned Parenthood said the foundation was succumbing to pressure from anti-abortion groups who have attacked the charity for partnering with Planned Parenthood. However, Komen said it was following its new criteria for making grants, "barring grants to organizations that are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities," and Rep. Cliff Stearns had launched such an investigation to see if "public money was improperly spent on abortions" in Planned Parenthood clinics. The AP story: http://politi.co/zPioQc

-- Stearns said in a statement he "understood" Komen's decision but his "main concern is why the American taxpayers are providing over $1 million a day to Planned Parenthood when we have trillion dollar deficits and a national debt exceeding $15 trillion. Repeated cases of Planned Parenthood ignoring state and local reporting requirements, many involving minors, and allegations of financial abuse led to my investigation."

--Hill Democrats were pretty upset about the decision. Sen. Patty Murray said that she was "extremely disappointed" by the Komen foundation and that "at the heart of this issue is the shameful "investigation" of Planned Parenthood by House Republicans trying to score political points and appease their extreme right-wing base." And Rep. Mike Honda's staff said he called Komen's president after the news broke to tell the organization how upset he was, calling it "the latest casualty in a misguided and harmful campaign."

--SO...WHY? So was it political pressure? Or just trying to keep in line with its own guidelines? Or something else? A number of blogs picked up on the fact that Komen's VP Karen Handel ran for governor of Georgia and is both anti-abortion and for defunding of Planned Parenthood. "[S]ince I am pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood," Handel wrote and noted she would end certain grants to the organization if elected Governor. http://bit.ly/zi1eg2""
