Obamacare and the Catholic Church (and other religious organizations)

Greg Schleppenbach, representing the Nebraska Catholic Conference forwarded the following letter to us. Much of the content of this is or will be shared in local parish churches across Nebraska.  The deals with the Obama/Sebelius healthcare edict on contraception coverage and also clarifies some information regarding the Susan Komen decision to defund Planned Parenthood.

To say that the president has really stepped into it is certainly an under-representation of the fact. Catholic and other religious-affiliated organizations across the country are enraged at the 'contraceptive' policy promoted by this president and his fallen-away Catholic Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius (excuse our dispersion, but she probably sleeps with fallen-away Catholic Nancy Pelosi when in San Francisco).

The policies of this anti-Catholic, anti-religious, pro-Muslim, anti-traditional marriage administration have already caused Catholic-run adoption agencies to close their doors.   The president and his administration are now basically saying follow my political dictates against your religious tenets, beliefs, and conscience or close down.    Where this dispute will end up is uncertain, but, you can bet that the decision is not going to be forgot, that it will escalate in discussion as November 6, approaches and that it will cost the president votes, and hopefully his presidency.

With that said, one shouldn't hold the leadership of the Catholic Church blameless.    It has need for its own mea culpa.  This decision and Obamacare's existence are partially due to the church's 'social justice' mentality which abetted and allowed Obamacare to come into existence along with the now realized unintended consequences.   IT IS PARTIALLY BECAUSE THE CATHOLIC CHURCHES AND MOST OTHER CHURCHES HAVE DECIDED THAT IT'S GOVERNMENT'S JOB TO DO WHAT HAS BEEN TRADITIONALLY THEIR JOB--TO TAKE CARE OF THE POOR AND HUNGRY AND TO HELP THOSE IN NEED.

Hopefully, the Catholic Church and other religious related organizations will simply follow their consciences and say they will not comply and will simply terminate their healthcare coverage rather than comply.

This is not a matter of politics, it is a matter of religious freedom, it's a matter of government over-reach and a matter of violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (as well as the Tenth Amendment).   If this regulation, if this law is not over-turned it will be just another step toward the end of religious freedom in our country.

Here is the letter from Schleppenbach: (while the letter notes the support of Nebraska's two senators for the "Respect for Rights of Conscience Act", we'd be remiss to not point out that it Nebraska's Judas Senator Ben Nelson that brought the country and the Catholic Churh's and other religious organizations to this point.)

Pro Life Update:
Obama's Unconscionable Attack on Religious Freedom
February 1, 2012

Dear Friends,
As you undoubtedly know by now, President Obama has leveled
a direct and unprecedented attack on religion and First Amendment rights.Dismissing the pleas of Catholic and non-Catholic religious
leaders and institutions, Secretary of Health and Human Services,
Kathleen Sebelius, issued a regulatory mandate forcing all health
insurance plans to pay for sterilizations and contraceptive drugs
and devices, including those that can cause abortions. Cardinal-elect
Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,
said that "[t]o force American citizens to choose between violating
their consciences and forgoing their healthcare is literally
unconscionable." He and numerous individual bishops have already
stated publicly that the Church cannot and will not comply with this
mandate and will employ every option available to defeat it.

The USCCB is developing suggested actions that we can take at the
diocesan and parish level to fight this mandate. When I receive them,
I will share them with all of you. In the meantime, our bishops are
asking us to pray and do penance that the Obama Administration's
attack on religious freedom will be reversed. They also urge us to
contact our members of Congress to protest this outrage and to insist
on the passage of the "Respect for Rights of Conscience Act"
Nebraskans are fortunate that Congressman Jeff Fortenberry
introduced this Act in the House (H.R. 1179) and Congressmen Lee
Terry and Adrian Smith co-sponsored it.And both of our Senators,
Mike Johanns and Ben Nelson, have co-sponsored the Senate version
of the Act (S. 1467).Please thank them and urge them to do everything
possible to get this critical policy enacted. Contact information for our
members of Congress is on my website at:
http://nebcathcon.org/Government%20contacts.htm.

I'm happy to be able to balance this very bad news with some good
news. It was made public yesterday that the Susan G. Komen
Foundation has decided to stop providing funding to Planned
Parenthood. They have existing contracts with PP that will last for
the next 12 months and then no more grants will be provided.
Komen will remain on the Life Decisions International boycott list
until these existing contracts expire, at which time Komen will be
removed (assuming its new policy remains intact). Please note that
the initial news report is wrong by indicating that the decision was
based solely on PP being under investigation. There are other critieria
as well that will preclude PP from getting future grants, regardless
of the outcome of the Congressional investigation. See today's
LifeNews.com article quoting Austin Ruse: http://www.lifenews.com/2012/02/01/komen-decision-to-yank-planned-parenthood-funding-is-permanent/.

Please share this information with your friends/family/etc. and
urge them to e-mail Komen at news@komen.org with the simple
message: "Thank you for defunding Planned Parenthood". Komen has
already received more than 2000 negative e-mails about its decision
and we need to FLOOD them with thank you e-mails!

Obscured by the Planned Parenthood policy change, it should also
be noted that Komen has recently posted a very clear and definitive
statement clarifying that they have not and do not fund human
embryonic stem cell research which can be viewed here: http://ww5.komen.org/uploadedFiles/Content/AboutUs/MediaCenter-2/Human%20Embryonic%20Stem%20Cell%20Research%20Statement%20for%20Web%2011.30.11.pdf. It says the following:

"Susan G. KomenHESCR) nor does Komen currently fund H-ESCR.
Komen supports research on the isolation, derivation, production,
and testing of stem cells that are capable of producing all or almost
all of the cell types of the developing body and may result in improved understanding of or treatments for breast cancer, but are derived
without creating a human embryo or destroying a human embryo."

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and forever!
