One would think that in the midst of a recession (oh, it's ended hasn't it?) that states would be doing everything possible to stimulate their economies. But not California which has been hit as hard as any state by the housing downturn. So what is California doing? Requiring that every new home built in California have a sprinkler system installed effective January 1, 2011. That will only add $3,000 to $4,000 to the price of each new home not sold in California. Oh, and yes every home, including those now built, will be required by law to have a carbon monoxide detector by January 1, 2013.
Well intentioned laws. It is the government's duty to assume personal responsibility for those who won't.
No doubt some Nebraska Legislator, i.e., Keith Mello, Jeremy Nordquist or Brad Ashford will be close behind.

Thankfully, current Nebraska law allows the local planning and zoning jurisdiction to opt out of any portions of the international building code. (Don't let Ashford hear about that!)
The ICC's 2009 code includes the fire suppression requirement, and if your city or county does not remove that provision, it is required throughout Nebraska right now.
